The French Press is possibly the most classic of all home brewing methods. Known for its heavy mouth feel and ease of preparation, this is a method we prefer when we really don't want to think about the how of making a cup of coffee.
What you need: 1 French Press. 40 grams of your favorite coffee. Scale. 640 grams of water fresh off the boil. Wooden stir stick or spoon. Timer. Mug.
Step 1: Heat the French Press with water just off the boil.
Step 2: Grind the coffee. Coffee should be ground to the consistency of breadcrumbs.
Step 3: Once your French Press is warmed up, pour out the water used to preheat and add your coffee.
Step 4: Add just enough water to saturate all of the coffee grounds. A good rule of thumb is to pour a bloom that is twice the weight of your coffee. (40g dose/80g bloom). Pour a bloom of 80 grams in 10 seconds. Stir and wait for 30 seconds.
Step 5: Over the next 30 seconds pour the rest of the water into the Press. Final pour of 640 grams by 1 minute.
Step 6: At 4 minutes, press the metal "press" piece down over the coffee. Pour the brewed coffee into your mug, and enjoy.
Depending on your serving size, this recipe makes 2-4 cups of coffee.
